This retail/office space complex was designed to have the character of a commercial block in a 19th century California town and to compliment Clayton’s existing downtown. The composition of the structure was articulated to create the look of multiple small buildings, so as not to appear too dominant in relation to the townscape. Each “building was given a distinct stylistic treatment based on different Victorian motifs. This was done to give the impression that the district had been developed over time. The choice materials and the detailing of the exterior employed construction technology based on the historic model.
