IL PIEMONTE, OAKLAND, CA

Il Piemonte is a small mixed-use urban-infill project in a 1920’s commercial district. The design draws from a variety of Mediterranean sources and recalls the Spanish Colonial Revival aesthetic of early 20th century California. The building is massed so as to create a linear courtyard, from which the Condominium dwellings are entered. They are located above a concrete podium containing retail spaces and a subterranean garage.  Both the modulation of the elevations and the varied roof lines reflect the sloping site and height limits. The corner tower marks the intersection of two busy streets and the beginning of this lively commercial district.  Located on a prominent corner this project receive glowing reviews from community stakeholders  for it’s scale, context. Il Piemonte received a Partners In Preservation Award for Sympathetic New Construction in an Historic Context from the Oakland Heritage Alliance.
